Perception vs Reality in Immigration

Quick, out of 100 people, how many people in Canada are immigrants? Or Muslim? Or Christian? The Guardian published the results of a recent poll that shows that—unsurprisingly—everyone thinks that there are far more immigrants and Muslims in their country than there actually are.

This stuff matters because these (largely fearful) perceptions form the basis of real politics. Do politicians look to reality, or do they merely pander to people’s existing, misinformed fears? Do we close our doors to immigrants just because we “have too/so many?” Oh, for more leaders with the moral imagination of Pope Francis.
